Do you know the story of the sand dollar?
In the center on the top, you can clearly see a star. This represents the Star of Bethlehem that led the Wise Men to the manger for Christ’s birth.
Around the star is the outline of the Easter Lily, a sign of Our Lord’s Resurrection. At the edges of the star are four holes, and another in the center. These represent the wounds of the crucified Christ.
On the reverse side, the sand dollar has an outline of the Poinsettia, the Christmas flower. If the sand dollar is broken open, five “doves” emerge, representing the doves of Peace and Joy at Christmas.
I have always loved the beach, walking in the surf, looking for sand dollars and I’ve always been drawn to them because of their quiet symbolism.
